Longing to be able to help needy children in Haiti and elsewhere, our group was excited when Judy (one of our Martha Ladies) told us about Pillowcase Dresses. After Leigh (another of our Martha Ladies) made several of them, the idea of a city-wide dress sewing party was born.

Being dependent upon donations, we asked our community for help. As usual, within days we began receiving pillowcases, fabric, lace and other needed supplies.

After weeks of cutting out dresses and preparing bias strips, neck ties, pockets, woven flowers, appliques and other decorations, April 10th finally arrived. With the door prizes wrapped and the refreshment tables filled with fresh baked breads, quiches, ham filled cream puffs, vegetable trays and many, many enticing deserts, we were ready to have fun.

Our first sewers arrived an hour early and were the last to leave. Throughout the afternoon, to the sounds of laughter and humming machines, forty five women filled the display walls with beautiful dresses and even took materials to continue sewing at home.

Special thanks and gratitude goes to everyone who helped and participated in this project for their work, their caring and their love. Because this gathering was so successful, it will now be an annual event and we hope you will be able to join us next year.

As these special dresses make their way to children in Haiti, our local community and throughout the world, I close with the following quote by Margaret Mead.

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."
